Southern Miss School of Leadership Professor Presents Three Papers at Dublin Conference

By: Dena Temple

Dr. Bhagyashree Barhate, Assistant Professor of Human Capital Development at The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) School of Leadership, presented three research papers at the recent University Forum for Human Resource Development Conference (UFHRD) in Dublin, Ireland.

The conference, sponsored by Fáilte Ireland and the Learning & Development Institute, is the flagship event for academic researchers and practitioners working in people management and related fields. Research presented at UFHRD covers a wide range of aspects of people management, including leadership and talent development, coaching and mentoring, inclusion and diversity, employee engagement, and career development and employability.

Dr. Barhate presented research on several relevant human capital development topics:

  • “Impact of Emotional Intelligence on Gen Z’s Career Resilience and Career Outcomes” (first author, with co-authors Dr. Bradley Winton and Dr. Casey Maugh-Funderburk, also from USM’s School of Leadership)
  • “Applying a Systems Thinking Approach to Increase Leadership Capacity” (second author, with co-authors Noeline Gunasekara and Dr. Khalil Dirani from Texas A&M University)
  • “Impact of Social Media Usage on Anxiety, Stress, and Depression Levels among Generation Z” (second author, with co-authors Dr. Ruchi Sao from Nirma University in Ahmedabad, India, and Shavan Chandak from Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management in Nagpur, India)

Dr. Barhate explained the importance of the conference: “At UFHRD, researchers from the European region are the majority in attendance. Access to these distinguished scholars is limited, considering they rarely attend American conferences. When my papers were accepted, I felt blessed to have the opportunity to present my work to this audience. It was a unique opportunity to be among thought leaders and academic leaders that have helped define the field of human resources development.”

This trip was Dr. Barhate’s first visit to Ireland, and she found Dublin to be “diverse and culturally rich.”

Dr. Heather Annulis, Director of the School of Leadership, acknowledged the importance of Dr. Barhate’s presentation to this international audience. “Dr. Barhate’s work is gaining notoriety internationally, and she continues to represent Southern Miss and the School of Leadership with distinction.”

The School of Leadership is housed within the College of Business and Economic Development at The University of Southern Mississippi and operates on the Coastal USM campus in Long Beach, Mississippi. Its undergraduate degree programs include Accounting, Applied Technology, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering Technology (Logistics), Management, and Marketing. Graduate programs include Human Capital Development, Human Capital Development (Instructional Technology and Design), Instructional Technology and Design, and Logistics, Trade and Transportation.
