Seven Choctaws Named to All-NCCAA Football Teams

      The Mississippi College football team had seven players named to the All-NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Teams, it was announced on Tuesday (Dec. 8) morning.

Junior Marcel Newson, senior Tyler Poe and sophomore Matthew Turcotte were named to the Second Team, while senior Chris Ingram, juniors Carl Rainey Jr. and Jamaal White and sophomore Chris Manning earned an Honorable Mention. Ingram, Turcotte and White were All-NCCAA honorees in the 2014 season, as well.

Newson, MarcelNewson (Coldwater, Miss. / Northwest MS CC) was just honored last week as MC’s C Spire Conerly Trophy nominee, an award presented to the top four-year college football player in the state of Mississippi. He led the Choctaws with 40 catches for 656 yards and eight touchdowns, accounting for 60% of the team’s receiving yards and 80% of the team’s receiving scores.

Poe, TylerPoe (Pearl, Miss. / Hinds CC) set a new MC record for single-season field goal percentage, making 9-of-10 on the season. The senior was 8-of-8 from inside 40 yards and made three field goals in games against Shorter and Delta State. Poe was also MC’s kickoff specialist, forcing opponents to start at their own 29-yard line with seven touchbacks.
Turcotte, Matthew
Turcotte (Philadelphia, Miss. / Neshoba Central HS) averaged 41.1 yards per punt this season with five punts over 50 yards and a long of 61 yards. He also landed 13 inside the 20-yard line and had a season-high average of 49 yards in the season finale against Delta State. He currently sits third in school history with 42.2 yards per punt over his career.

Ingram, ChrisIngram (Southaven, Miss. / Itawamba CC) was MC’s leading rusher this season with 674 yards on 128 carries, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He was named MC’s Most Outstanding Senior by the Jackson Touchdown Club and had a season-high 129 yards on 19 carries against West Alabama. He finished ranked 22nd in school history with 269 carries for 1,243 yards in just two seasons.

Rainey, CarlRainey, Jr. (Pascagoula, Miss. / Pascagoula HS) finished as MC’s fourth-leading tackler with 46 stops, including 33 solo. He also posted 3.5 tackles for loss with 2.5 sacks at the defensive end position. Rainey led the team in tackles with 10 against Shorter and 11 against West Georgia.

White (De Kalb, Miss. / East MS CC) graded out as MC’s top offensive lineman for the second straight season. After earning a Second Team All-NCCAA selection in 2014, he played more plays than any othWhite, Jamaaler offensive lineman and had a team-high 29 knockdowns on the year.

Manning, ChrisManning (Section, Ala. / Section HS) finished 6th on the team with 34 tackles, despite missing the season finale against Delta State with an injury. Selected as a team captain as a sophomore, he has started 15 of 19 games in his first two seasons, leading the team with three interceptions over that span.
