Positive Start for the Trojans

The Magee Trojans football team won Thursday’s away non-conference game against Lawrence County by a score of 44-27 in the 1st KDMC Kickoff Classic at Copiah Lincoln Community College.

Captains for Magee were #1 – Tyrique McAfee, #4 – RJ Hopkins, and #55 Monquavis Craft. Trojans received opening kickoff. Magee crossed the goal line first with a 6-yard run by #4- RJ Hopkins. Trojans completed a 2-point conversion leading 8-0.

Lawrence County answered with 5:35 remaining in 1st quarter with a 35-yard pass for a touchdown. PAT was good. Lawrence County led 8-7. Again, Lawrence County capitalized and scored on a 5-yard run PAT good to bring the score 8-14.

10:04 remaining in the second quarter Magee answered with a 25-yard pass, 2-point conversion good to put the Trojans back on top 16-14.

6:58 Lawrence County punched a 25-yard run into the end zone. A fake extra point was no good. Cougars were now in control with a score of 16-20.

Magee would get a good return on kick off to the 40-yard line but failed to move the ball.

Lawrence County scored one more time on a 40-yard pass. PAT good, and Cougars increase lead to 16-27.

Magee then took control of the night. Needed adjustments seemed to take place on defense for the remaining second half. Magee scored on a 38-yard pass. 2-point conversion was no good. Trojans trail 22-27.

2:25 left in 3rd quarter Magee scored on a 15 yard run by RJ Hopkins. 2-point conversion was good Magee up 30-27.

Lawrence County, close to their end zone, went for the 1st down and Magee’s defense stopped the cougars and Trojans got the ball back on downs.

Magee scored on the next play with a long pass only to have the TD called back for a penalty.

Momentum was on the Trojans side and they scored on a 1-foot run by R J Hopkins. 2-point conversion was no good and Magee increased the lead 36-27 with 8:35 left in regulation.

6:47 left in the game, #7 – Joaquin Blackwell sealed the win for the Trojans on a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown. 2-point conversion was good Magee on top 44-27.

End of regulation Magee was presented the 1st KDMC Kickoff Classic trophy. Present for the presentation was David Wilkerson, KDMC, Tim Coats, Head Coach – Magee and Ronnie Neetles, President, Copiah Lincoln Community College.

Magee will celebrate the victory through the weekend, but Monday focus turns to preparing for Salem. Magee will play a non-conference game at home Friday night, 7:00 pm, Trojan field.

Congratulations to Coach Coats and his team in a victory and great start to the 2016 season.
