Mississippi Delegation Welcomes $100 Million Grant for Jackson Public Safety
United Delegation Supported Capital City’s Bid for DOJ Model Cities Initiative Resources
Washington — U.S. Senators Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., along with U.S. Congressmen Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., Trent Kelly, R-Miss., Michael Guest, R-Miss., and Mike Ezell, R-Miss., welcomed a $100 million award from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) that will support public safety improvements in Jackson, Mississippi.
The City of Jackson applied for this funding through the DOJ Model Cities Initiative, which was established through the summer 2025 reconciliation law to direct federal resources to cities working to enhance public safety measures.
The Mississippi delegation, which sent a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche advocating for Jackson to receive this funding, released the following joint statement:
“Mississippi is at its best when its capital city reflects the strength of our entire state. Jackson has been making strides in public safety, and this funding will help community leaders do even more to reduce crime and support victims.
“The City of Jackson has launched a coordinated effort to raise quality of life by combining public health and public safety initiatives. This Model Cities funding will advance that vision. The grant will strengthen mental health services, improve crisis response, and empower law enforcement.
“We applaud Mayor Horhn for successfully pursuing this award and for investing in Jackson’s future. Safer neighborhoods help families thrive, attract new residents, and fuel economic growth in Jackson and beyond.”
In addition, Jackson Mayor John Horhn made the following statement:
“Reducing violent crime requires a unified effort across every sector of our city. The Model Cities Initiative provides an opportunity to bring our departments, public safety partners, and community organizations together around a common goal: making our neighborhoods safer and improving the quality of life for all residents. We are committed to ensuring that our collective efforts are coordinated, focused, and responsive to the needs of our communities.”
The City of Jackson is currently pursuing an ambitious, city-wide plan that pairs investments in public health with public safety. This funding will support those efforts by providing the city with the resources to invest in mental health programs, substance abuse treatment, and law enforcement agencies.
