Gene Crosby
A Game Well Played
“A game well played” might best describe the life of Gene Crosby–a man who loved God, family, friends, life, and of course, golf.
He passed away peacefully on October 30th in Mendenhall. Born November 2nd, 1936, on a small farm in Moselle, Mississippi, Gene lived his nearly 90 years to the fullest, filling them with laughter, love, and a remarkable ability to make those around him smile.
After meeting and marrying his beloved wife, Wanda, Gene moved with her to Mendenhall, where they carried on a cherished family tradition as owners of Gulledge Furniture on Main Street, a business originally established by Wanda’s parents. They continued the family legacy, building lasting friendships and serving the community they loved until their retirement.
Gene had a special gift for making people feel valued. He quietly helped those in need, never seeking recognition, and found genuine joy in lifting the spirits of others. He was never hesitant to tell his family and friends that he loved them, and those words were always heartfelt.
Golf was one of Gene’s greatest passions, but for him, the game was never simply about the score.
It was about the friendships formed, the laughter shared, the stories told, and the countless memories made along the way. The true measure of a good round was not found on the scorecard, but in the company he kept.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wanda Gulledge Crosby, and his brother, Jolly Crosby.
He is survived by his son, Mickey Crosby (Gay); daughters, Chantel Everett (Joel) and Kecia Mullins (Winston); grandchildren, Haley Carpenter (Rob), Tate Crosby (Bailey), Reece Everett (Lauren), and Crosby Mullins; and great-grandchildren, Neel, Crosby, and Camp Carpenter.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at The Church of Mendenhall on Sunday, November 1st, 2026, at 2:00 pm, with visitation preceding the service from 12:30 pm until 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Church of Mendenhall.
Geno, yours was truly a game well played. You filled our lives with love, laughter, and memories we will forever treasure. How thankful we are to have been part of your game.
