The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has announced that professors Frederick Green and Quincy Brown will serve as grand marshals for the Spring 2022 Commencement ceremonies at the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses.

Rick GreenGreen, Professor of Recreational Therapy, has been named grand marshal of the Hattiesburg Commencement ceremonies, set for May 12-13. Brown, Associate Professor in the School of Leadership, has been selected as grand marshal of the Gulf Park ceremonies, set for May 14 in Long Beach.

A native of the Chicago area, Green has been a member of the USM faculty since 1991. He worked previously as Assistant Director of Recreational Sports at Southern Illinois University for seven years.

When asked if he was surprised by the news of being named grand marshal for the spring commencement, Green said: “I was quite surprised. The significance of this honor did not quite sink in until I started receiving emails congratulating me.”

Quincy Brown Brown makes his home in Long Beach, site of USM’s Gulf Park campus, but he grew up in nearby Moss Point, Miss. He joined the USM faculty in 2014. Prior to that he served as Integrated Technology Director of a private school in Pensacola, Fla.

He also worked at the University of West Florida (UWF) as the Program Manager of a Doctoral Support Center, Instructor and Research Assistant. While at UWF, he also served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University. Before beginning his academic career, Brown served 30 years on active duty in the United States Navy.

He too expressed surprise, mixed with gratitude, at being chosen a grand marshal.

“I am thrilled that the faculty and administration would even consider me for the honor of leading the academic procession with the University mace in hand,” said Brown. “I have often stated that the greatest joy of my job is to see students graduate. To lead this procession will be something I will always hold dear.”
