These challenges are temporary.
Our resolve is permanent.
Yesterday, we made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend the 2020 Legislative Session until at least April 1. It is important for Mississippians to have access to the Capitol when the public’s business is being conducted. The current known and unknown circumstances with COVID-19 have made it impossible to continue the Session for now.
Since the press conference announcing the first diagnosed case of COVID-19 in the State last week, we have been working diligently to support the Governor’s Office and Department of Health, take up legislation which may ease any burden Mississippians are facing during this crisis, and collect information from impacted constituencies, including healthcare providers, schools, and small businesses.
In the days ahead, analyzing the economic situation will be one of our most important priorities.
If there is anything I am sure about, it is that Mississippians are kind, hardworking, and resilient people. Our future is bright.
We will continue to plant and harvest the food which feeds us and the world. We will build the cars which transport us. We will build ships which defend us. Our schools will continue to educate our children. We will again join our friends, families, and neighbors at sporting events, restaurants, and churches.
In short, our lives will return to normal.
These challenges are temporary. Our resolve is permanent.
In the meantime, let us all do what we can to practice good hygiene, follow the recommendations of healthcare professionals, and protect our vulnerable citizens. Updated information about COVID-19 from the State Health Officer is available at www.healthyms.com.
Thank you for your support!
