Summertime in Simpson County usually means time to haul hay. I worked many summer days on my Uncle Draughn Magee farm that was just outside of Magee on Hwy 28 West. The most fun of this was working with his son-in-law , Wes Sullivan of Mendenhall.
There were always two things that Wes loved to talk about while we were working, Ole Miss football and Dolly Parton. My dad was usually there as well and would just work Wes over pretty good….. Especially about Ole Miss.
Those of you that remember Wes will remember that he loved to tell a good joke. A lot of his jokes in the hay field were about Dolly Parton. I remember once we were listening to Dolly while we worked and Wes turned to me and ask ” Do you know Dolly’s two biggest assets to her popularity? I was thinking to myself “yeah I probably do but do I say it out loud? ” Then before I could answer Wes said “Number 1 she’s from a small town and Number 2 she knows how to treat her fans”. I’m glad he spoke up first because as a young teenager that was NOT the answer I was about to give. One of his favorite songs was “Two Doors Down ” , I think of him each time I hear it. Wes is gone now but I’ll never forget his jolly sense of humor and his love of Dolly Parton …. tunes!
