Mr. G.W. Shorter, Jr. received his eternal reward on Wednesday November 25, 2020. Mr. G.W. passed peacefully at home of natural causes surrounded by family.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2020 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the New Zion Baptist Church in Braxton.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, November 29, 2020 at 3:00 PM at New Zion Baptist Church. Bro. John Gordan, Bro. Jimmy Errington and Bro. Carlous Smith will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall is in charge of arrangements. (601) 847-4401

G.W. was born May 20, 1929 in Braxton, MS to George W. Shorter and Delana Barron Shorter. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1962. G.W. met and married his wife of 61 years, Jessie (Stewart) Shorter May 30, 1959 and settled on family land in the New Zion community where they raised their 3 daughters.

He retired from Sperry Vickers/Eaton with 35 years service as a Mechanic in 1991.

G.W. spent his adult life doing what he enjoyed most; farming and raising his family in love and God’s word where he became the oldest living Shorter male in Mississippi.

G.W. was a lifelong member of New Zion Baptist Church where his love of Christ and music intersected in his service as a Deacon and Song Director for over 50 years. He taught Sunday School for a lot of those years and his love for his church and church family always shined bright and true. He remained devoted to Christ’s teachings and to the service of love for his church family for the entirety of his life.

Mr. G.W. is preceded in death by his father, George W. Shorter; Mother, Delana Barron Shorter; Sister, Glendola (Shorter) Kennedy and Grandson, Zachary Neal Martin.

Survivors include: Wife of 61 years, Jessie (Stewart) Shorter. Daughter; Suzan (Neal) Martin. Daughter; Denise (Tim) Shows. Daughter; Patti (Chris) Patton. Grandchildren; Jessica (Tyler) Ordway. Elizabeth (Garrett) Brandon. Matt Shows and Jennifer Shows. Great-grandchildren; Walker and Gunner Ordway and baby Brandon. Nephew, David Kennedy Sr. And great-nephew David Kennedy Jr.

Mr. G.W. Shorter Jr will be laid to eternal rest in the family cemetery at New Zion Baptist Church Braxton, MS.
