The 2016 Mize Bulldog baseball team is off to a strong start. After sweeping the Taylorsville Jamboree, the team has since earned a record of 9-3 overall.

In the home opener, the bulldogs tallied 20 hits as Landon Austin defeated Scott Central by throwing a no hitter and recording 14 strike outs on the day. The team has gone on to win 8 additional games, including an upset over undefeated Lake High School.

On the mound, the Bulldogs have two notable pitchers with Mikey Cook and Landon Austin. After our senior catcher suffered a significant shoulder injury, a freshman, John Sullivan, really stepped up and answered the call behind the plate. “We are pleased with his play at catcher, love his work ethic, and look forward to continued growth at that position,” said Coach Dyess. As of late, the Bulldogs are collectively piecing together adequate offense.

Last week, Mize got their first district win by defeating North Forest. The Eagles jumped out in front of the Bulldogs early on in the game, however, in the third Mize tied it up. Mize put together a strong finish in the game. Tucker Rogers highlighted the Mize comeback with a 2-run double, while Josh Sullivan scored on a passed ball and Chay Herring connected on an RBI single. Landon Austin went the distance and picked up the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were scheduled to meet the Eagles again Friday night but the game had to be re-scheduled due to rain.

On Saturday, the Mize Bulldogs hosted the Magee Trojans. The top of the first saw the Trojans take an early lead, 3-0. Magee High School caught fire after Bryson Mills singled. Then Nick Bullock homered, bringing home Dalton Cockrell and Mills. Magee scored another 4 runs in the second inning. It didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to answer as they scored three runs of their own in the second. The Bulldogs scored on a two run single by Josh Sullivan and an RBI single by Landon Austin. Mize put in pitcher, Mikey Cook, who allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out four during his five innings of work. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth on a passed ball that scored Aaron Ragsdale. In the seventh inning, Josh Sullivan drove in three runs, helping the Bulldogs gain an 8-7 victory.

Upcoming events for the Mize Bulldogs this week are hosting Simpson Academy Thursday evening at 7:00, travelling to Enterprise Clark Friday at 11:00 a.m. and playing at Magee High School field Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The Mize High School Baseball team will host a military appreciation tournament at Mize High School on April 2nd, 2016. The first pitch will be thrown out by retired Col. John W. Logan of Prentiss, MS at 10:55 am. The team will be wearing (one time only) Camo jerseys that will be auctioned off via a silent auction during the came. 100% of the auction proceeds as well as the donation box from the concession orders will be given to Wounded Warrior of Mississippi. President of the organization, Cheryl Bruce, will be on hand to receive the contribution. Mize Baseball partnered with Eagle Green Energy and , together, will award a paid vacation to Montana for a trout fishing excursion on the Yellowstone River, a free cabin, free meals, transportation to and from the airport and for the duration of the stay, free fishing tackle rental, and free licensing documents to fish for one veteran and a guest who will be present at the first game that day. The vacation and recognition will be awarded at 10:50am (just prior to the start of game 1). The United Blood Services truck will be on hand that day to hold a blood drive. Preregistration is encouraged by contacting either Mize High School at (601) 733-2242 or UBS. Crawfish plates are on sale now and can be picked up at the game. You do not have to pay to get into the game just to pick up your crawfish plates. Contact Mize High School and speak to Coach Adam Dyess to place a crawfish order between now and March 28th. The plates are $13 for one, 2 plates for $24, or 3 plates for $32. If you did not pre-order a plate, crawfish will be sold as individual plates at the game for $15, while it lasts. Each plate holds approximately 2lbs. For desert, enjoy a Kona Ice snow-cone at the game as you support our veterans, service members and ball club.
The schedule for the day: Mize vs Mendenhall at 11AM, Mendenhall vs Salem at 1:30PM, and Mize vs Salem at 3:45PM. All veterans and active service members will be recognized at the game and be allowed free entry to the game with a military ID (no dependent IDs please).
