MAGEE, Miss. – Residents across Magee, Simpson County, and much of central Mississippi should take precautions today as dangerous heat and humidity combine to create heat index values approaching 105 degrees.
The National Weather Service has placed much of southern and central Mississippi under a Level 1 (Limited) Heat Stress risk for today. While this is the lowest category on the heat stress scale, prolonged outdoor activity can still lead to fatigue and heat exhaustion, especially for those working outside, participating in sports, or spending extended periods in the sun.
Today’s forecast calls for temperatures in the low 90s, but the combination of high humidity and heat will make it feel significantly hotter.
The National Weather Service recommends taking several simple precautions to stay safe:
- 💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- ☀️ Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning if working outdoors.
- 👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- 🚗 Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time.
- ⚠️ Learn to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses, including dizziness, heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, or confusion.
Forecasters also warn that heat stress is expected to increase this weekend and continue into early next week, meaning even hotter and more dangerous conditions are likely in the days ahead.
Everyone is encouraged to use caution during the hottest part of the day, check on elderly neighbors and family members, and make sure pets have access to shade and plenty of fresh water.
