Mississippi College graduate Tim Martin will do a fabulous job as the new leader of the Clinton Public School District.
That’s the opinion of MC professors who worked closely with Dr. Martin for years. The Clinton School Board on April 11 named the Mississippian to succeed retiring Superintendent Phil Burchfield on July 1.
“We are so excited for Clinton Schools and their continued path of excellence under the leadership of Dr. Martin,” says MC School of Education Dean Cindy Melton.
Tim earned three Mississippi College degrees: a bachelor’s and master’s in elementary education and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction. He’s served as an adjunct instructor in the Christian university’s educational leadership program.
Melton knows Tim as a classmate, colleague and friend. “He has the best interests of Clinton students in mind, and has earned the respect of the Clinton faculty and community.”
Martin understands a mountain of educational data. But he also knows how to put valuable career lessons into practice for his students on the Clinton campus.
“He is a fantastic instructor who makes the information understandable and relatable,” Melton said. “We look forward to our continued partnership with Clinton schools and Dr. Martin.”
Melton remains an active stakeholder in the Clinton district.  She and her husband, Derek, are the parents of two children attending Clinton public schools.
Martin is delighted to step up after serving Clinton schools since 2000 as an administrator. He worked quite well with Dr. Burchfield and former Superintendent Tommye Henderson. She’s in her 9th year as a Mississippi College education professor.
“I’ve been part of the tremendous successes in the Clinton Public School District as principal and assistant superintendent under the leadership of Dr. Henderson and Dr. Burchfield, two wonderful superintendents,” Martin said. “Now I want to continue that success into the future.”
Martin’s hiring received the strong endorsement of the Clinton School Board.
“He knows this district and he’s well-respected by our faculty, parents and community,” said School Board President Derek Holmes.
Martin should help one of Mississippi’s premier districts advance to an even higher level, says longtime MC education professor Tom Williams.
“I do not know of another educator who is better qualified than Dr. Martin to lead the Clinton public schools,” Williams said.
The district’s 5th superintendent, Martin will succeed an award-winning administrator starting this summer. “Dr. Burchfield has been an exemplary leader for the Clinton Public Schools,” Williams said. Clinton schools employed several outstanding superintendents over the years. “Dr. Tim Martin is ready to take his place as the next in line of visionary leaders.”
Martin served as the district’s assistant superintendent since 2003. He was principal of Clinton Junior High from 2000-03. In 2011, the Clintonian was named the Mississippi College Distinguished Alumnus in the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership.
Martin and his wife, Cindy, are the parents of three children: Lindsey, Sara and Hunter. He serves as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church Clinton.
