As I approached my high school years, one of the courses we were able to take was Drivers Education.

Well I along with several of my high school buddies thought this was just the greatest thing ever!!

It was an opportunity to be outside, away from school and best part of all– driving a car!

Now That’s a Stump!

Our Drivers Education Instructor was Magee High football coach John Mangum. We all loved Coach Mangum so we knew this was going to be a fun course.

We had an Oldsmobile Cutlass Surpreme as our training car and Coach Mangum brought along his favorite music tape “Eagles- Greatest Hits “.

In the beginning our class consisted of driving slowly in and around the city streets of Magee. Learning the basics, stopping, starting, giving a turn signal.

As time went on and our skills got better, we would venture out farther and farther away from town.

Once we were driving , listening to the Eagles and Coach fell asleep. Without any instruction on which turns to take we just kept driving and listening to the Eagles.

By the time that Coach woke up, we were somewhere near Collins. Needless to say that Coach wasn’t very happy with us that day. He said “pull over and stop the engine”.

Coach got behind the wheel and raced us back to Magee. Of course we didn’t make it to our next class in time and we were all late.

It was a day I’ll always remember, just a group of kids on a nice Spring day living “Life In The Fast Lane”.
