Authorities are investigating the death of a 25-year-old man who was discovered inside a vehicle Tuesday morning, September 15, on Goshen Road near Highway 541 North in Simpson County.
According to information released by the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a call at approximately 6:40 a.m. concerning a suspicious vehicle parked along Goshen Road. A passing motorist noticed the vehicle but did not see anyone around it.
At the time of the call, Simpson County deputies were tied up on another matter, and Magee Police Department officers responded to check the vehicle.
While checking the vehicle, officers reportedly noticed what appeared to be blood near the trunk area. Concerned that someone could be inside and in need of immediate assistance, officers opened the trunk.
A man was found inside.
The victim was later identified as 25-year-old Gromico Womack Jr.
Simpson County deputies arrived at the scene shortly afterward, and investigators were notified. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit was called to assist with processing the scene and the continuing investigation.
Simpson County Sheriff Paul Mullins confirmed that investigators believe some type of altercation occurred leading up to Womack’s death.
Mullins also stressed that authorities believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no indication of a continuing threat to the general public.
Investigators are asking for the public’s help as they work to determine what happened.
Anyone who was traveling in the area of Highway 541 North and Goshen Road around 6 a.m. Tuesday, or anyone who may have seen a vehicle, person or other suspicious activity in the area, is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
