After 46 years at Magee Piggly Wiggly, James Ainsworth—the man so many of us know from the meat market—is hanging up his apron and headed to the house!
I’ve already told James I don’t know what Piggly Wiggly shoppers are going to do without him!
Forty-six years is a long time to work anywhere, and James has certainly seen some changes. During our interview, he recalled that when he first started at “the Pig,” hamburger meat was around 50 cents a pound! Needless to say, he has watched the price of groceries—and especially meat—change quite a bit through the years.
James has also worked under eight managers and alongside more employees than he could possibly count.
“I’ve worked with some of the best people,” James said. “So many have come and gone I can’t remember them all!”
But I imagine there are plenty of people who remember James.
For generations of Magee families, James has been a familiar face behind the meat counter. He knew his customers, helped them find what they needed and, more than likely, shared a story or two while he was at it.
James’ service to this community didn’t stop at the Piggly Wiggly doors, either.
He has helped countless people and organizations through the years, including the Magee Fire Department. Fire Chief David Craft said there is no telling how many additional scholarships the department was able to award because James kept an eye on those Boston butt sales! When James found a deal, he made sure the fire department knew about it.
The fire department loves James—and I think it’s safe to say a whole lot of Magee does, too.
When retirement officially begins, James’ wife, Kristy, will continue working. I think both of them are looking forward to seeing some of the everyday stress lifted from James’ shoulders.
And where will we find him?
Probably in the woods!
Y’all know how much James loves to hunt. During deer season, he has always kept me posted on his tally, so I don’t expect retirement to slow that down one bit. In fact, he may have a little more time to add to that tally now!
James and Kristy have one son, Jamie, and I know retirement will also mean more time for family and simply enjoying life without that alarm clock telling him it’s time to head to work.
I think most of us have a “James story.” After 46 years, how could we not?

James, we are going to miss seeing you at the Pig. But after 46 years of taking care of customers, helping your community and being a friend to so many, I’d say you’ve earned a little play time.
