Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, May 5, 2020 for their regular scheduled meeting. A recap of the meeting is provided below.
During the meeting, the board voted to change curfew hours to 11:30 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. The decision for change came with the order of the Governor that restaurants can reopen Thursday, May 7, 2020. Restaurants can have 50% capacity with no party larger than 6.
The board altered the curfew times allowing citizens the opportunity to eat out. With limited seating in the restaurants, lines will be longer and citizens will have to wait longer to be seated. Pushing the curfew back a couple of hours will help to allow everyone to be serviced.
Mayor Berry advised the City of Magee was in good financial shape during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The City has nor furloughed any workers and has been able to operate as usual. Berry advised he called the Canadian National railroad company requesting them to return to Magee and repair the railroad track crossing. Previous work on railroad left roads in poor shape and the crossings very rough. The company has been asked to come back and repair the roads.
Berry reminded all city residences and city business that trash must be bagged and placed in a garbage container beside the street. Do not leave bagged trash that is not in a container by the street.
Berry asked for continued prayers for Ashley Steele, Airport Manager, during her sickness. Prayers were also requested for city employee Kim Jackson in the loss of her brother Keith Jackson.
Chief of Police, Randy Crawford, stated theft issues have slowed down since the curfew has been in place. The largest issue was foot traffic which has now slowed down. Other issues the police department are dealing with are the abuse of vehicles and disturbing the peace. Loud mufflers and music have become an ongoing problem in the City. The board asked Chief Crawford to make sure the officers are enforcing and writing tickets for disturbing the peace issues with the loud mufflers and music.
Governor Tate Reeves granted all parks permission to reopen Thursday, May 7, 2020 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The parks included to reopen in Magee are McNair Springs, City Park, YMCA, and Sports Complex. No more than 20 people at a time and social distancing must be observed at the parks.
With no further business meeting was recessed until Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
