The Mississippi College softball team held on for a 5-4 victory on Saturday afternoon over West Georgia, extending their winning streak to 13 games, the longest for an MC team since a 16-game streak in 1987.
The Lady Choctaws (24-9, 14-7 GSC) have now won 18-of-19 games and jumped up to #4 in the Gulf South Conference standings after opening the year 0-6 in league play.
The Wolves (21-17, 9-12 GSC) got off to a fast start with two run in the opening inning off senior Carlie Sargent (13-4). Back-to-back extra-base hits by UWG put them ahead 2-0 after one frame.
Sargent would settle down from there, retiring 14 of the next 15 batters. The Oxford, Ala. native struck out four with no walks and needed just 80 pitches in the victory.
Senior Madison Oliver got MC on the board in the second inning with a two-out RBI double to score junior Haley Thompson.
The big blow came in the third inning when the Lady Choctaws loaded the bases with two outs as senior Lauren Mulligan and junior Tylan Buckley walked and freshman Alexia Harmon singled.
Freshman Kristen Qualls continued her run of clutch hitting with a bases-clearing double that put MC ahead for good, 4-2. On Friday, the former Madison Central standout hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give MC a lead they would not relinquish.
Buckley would drive in a run of her own in the fifth inning with a double to score junior Megan Everett, who reached on an error to open the inning.
The Wolves cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning with a solo home run and put the game-tying run at second base in the seventh, but Sargent coaxed an infield pop-fly to end the game.
Oliver led the MC offense with two hits, while three Wolves tallied two-hit games.
Megan Roberts (2-2) took the loss for the Wolves, allowing four earned runs with six walks over 3.1 innings.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in Gulf South Conference action next weekend when they will host Valdosta State for a three-game series, beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.
