Jerry Darrell Pettis, 65, of Magee, MS died Sunday, May 15, 2016 at home of chronic heart failure. He was born Tuesday, May 8, 1951 in Magee, MS.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee, MS. Bro. Andy Delancey will officiate. A Masonic Graveside Service will be conducted at the Magee City Cemetery in Magee, MS. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee is in charge of arrangements (601) 849-5031.
Jerry retired from the City of Magee as the Compliance Director and Certified Water and Waste Water Operator. Prior, he was the broadcast engineer at WSJC. He was a founding member of the Simpson County Amateur Radio Association and served as President. He was the manager of Radio Shack in the 1970s and 1980s. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he stayed at the City of Magee’s main water plant to manually control the water system so the residents of Magee would have water since there was a power outage for several weeks. He also used his Amateur Radio skills to contact MEMA so food and water could be delivered to the city’s residents. He enjoyed playing the guitar with his brother Buddy and riding his motorcycle. He was a member of Oak Hill Masonic Lodge #553 in Magee where he had previously served as Secretary. He was a Master Mason. His Amateur Radio callsign was KA5LNY.
He is preceded in death by his Father – Edgar Pettis; Step-Father – Emory Sanders Whitley; Brother – Edgar “Buddy” Pettis; Brother – Charles Edward Pettis; Sister-in-law – Linda Lacks Pettis; Brother-in-law – Anthony Edwards; Brother-in-law – Dwight McWilliams.
Survivors include Wife – Peggy Jane Everett Pettis, Magee, MS; Daughter – Vickie Ann Pettis Cooper (William Eugene Cooper III) of Huntsville, AL; Grandson – William Everett Cooper of Huntsville, AL; Mother – Vida Creel Whitley of Magee, MS; Sister – Florence Adcock (Glenn) of Florence, MS; Sister – Priscilla Dianne Edwards of Magee, MS; Friends of the family – Scott Preston Bailey of Brandon, MS and Jimmy Lucky of Magee, MS,
Pallbearers will be Steve Prestwood, Stacie Wallace, Steve Byrd, Billy Frank Smith, Jesse Mills, Larry Runnels, Johnny Ray Smith, Kevin Runnels, Benton Sullivan, Larry Burrs, and David Hegwood.
Visitation will be held Monday, May 16, 2016 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee,
