At Tuesday night’s Board of Alderman meeting, David Dunn, zoning commissioner, brought to the attention of the Board food trucks in our area. Presently, the city has operated under the rule of trucks locating in a C-3 zone. C-3 Zone is major thoroughfares commercial district, such as the highway.

Food trucks are not addressed in our present zoning laws.

I don’t think anyone wants to “run” food trucks out of Magee…and I don’t think anyone wants us not to receive taxes for a service.

At this time, Food Trucks pay a privilege license fee ($25) to the city. I know all of our restaurants are paying much more than $25 in taxes per year!

I like food trucks. But, I appreciate the taxes our local businesses bring to our city. These taxes make life in Magee much better. I feel the Board must adopt a policy that is helpful and fair to everyone (brick and mortar stores & portable). The zoning decision should not be made quickly. We must study other cities zoning laws concerning food trucks.

No recommendation was made at Tuesday night’s meeting…but the heat is on to look at the big picture of Food Trucks VS Restaurants .

On the home page of MageeNews.com is the video from Tuesday night’s meeting. If you have time, watch it all…but if you are interested in the “food truck talk,” check toward the end of the video.

I did find out some information on how Rankin County handles the Food Truck situation…and the cost!

A privilege license
and operation permit must be obtained from the Mississippi Department of Health and the local
Zoning Administrator prior to the initiation of a food truck
operation. The local permit shall cost
an initial fee of $2,500, and the permit shall be renewed annually for a fee of $1,000
(Rankin County Zoning Law 417.07)

Let me know what you think!
