LSU has backed down from putting the former NFL players on its 2026 football roster. LSU finalized its 105-player roster on Tuesday, September 8, and Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris were not included. That means they will not play for LSU this season under the current roster.
This came after quite a fight. A Louisiana judge had issued an injunction that temporarily cleared a path for the former NFL players to play, but the SEC maintained its rule prohibiting players who had signed NFL contracts from returning to play for an SEC school. The conference had also approved severe potential penalties, including a half-season suspension for the head coach and a fine equal to half of the school’s football athletic budget. The vote on those penalties was 15–0, with LSU abstaining.
And there is an even bigger development: SEC presidents and chancellors are scheduled to meet today, September 10, to discuss LSU’s continued membership in the conference. According to AP, LSU’s decision not to roster the former NFL players did not automatically end the dispute. Expelling LSU would require a two-thirds vote of the conference’s university leaders.
So the short version is: LSU will not use the former NFL players this season, but the LSU–SEC dispute itself isn’t necessarily over.
