Today, I’m just writing a jumble of stuff about what’s happening…or what I am hearing when I hit the streets! (That didn’t sound to0 good!)
Prayers for Helen, one of the fabulous cooks at Zips, whose house burned Tuesday. (See picture on home page). Not sure how the fire started but no one was at home.
Here is the report from Fire Marshall Charlie Valadie:1531: Report of a house fire on 5th Ave SE; actual location was 507 1st. St SE. Responded w/ Ladder 1, Engine 1, & 15 personnel. Heavy smoke showing upon arrival. Made entry w/ 2 hose lines; found fire in front bedroom. The fire was contained to that area w/ some minor extension into attic. Fire declared under control @ 1544. Heat damage was moderate in the front bedroom & minor in the attic immediately above the fire area. Moderate smoke damage occurred throughout the 1160 sq. ft home. The fire is thought to have originated in the front bedroom from an electrical issue. An overloaded electrical power strip/surge protector that may have been insulated by clothing &/or other materials is the most likely source of ignition.
The City Auction held Saturday, January 14th, was successful! $26,755 was collected! $4,325 went to the city…$6,100 to the police department, $16,330 for seized vehicles. Something very interesting to me, approximately 85% of the people purchasing were from our area!
Improvements are constantly being made to our City Park. (money comes from the Healthy You Grant received from Blue Cross & Blue Shield last year). The walking track has been worked on…new asphalt…and much cleaner…the Pavilion has been built…hopefully the road will be paved. Last year work was done on the bathrooms near the tennis court which serves the entire park. Our park is used probably more than most people realize. Always there are people in the area for lunch as well as children playing and people walking! Great job city!
Relay for Life will be moved to downtown Magee near PriorityOne and fire station. Ashley Steele is the chairman of this year’s event.
Bats are still at the Magee Elementary. School lunches for the elementary are being prepared at the high school and middle school cafeterias. Children are eating their lunch in the classroom. The children eat breakfast at the high school.
Much thanks to Nevis Rankin and his city crew for repairing the water break between Magee Middle and High School. Talking about a river of water!!! School dismissed at 11 but everything is “running” smoothly Wednesday!
The Braxton Planners will be selling soup and cornbread on January 19th 5:30pm until 7:00pm at the Braxton Community Center located on Main Street in Braxton. The cost is only $5.00.
More to come…
