Mrs. Amanda Sumrall, the Pride of Simpson County Band Director, found that music and band started to become very important to her while trying to find the right journey for herself.

Mrs. Sumrall grew up feeling as if she were an outcast. She explains, “I had an amazing high school band director. Band was my escape. Like many teens, life wasn’t easy for a girl like me, and band was where I fit in. It helped me grow as an individual.” After high school, she decided music was what she wanted to pursue. Mrs. Sumrall graduated from William Carey University and was one of the first students in Carey’s instrumental program after it was re-implemented in 2012.

When asked about how she came up with this year’s show, Humans v. Heroes, she responded, “I had a show picked out-it was a “literary” show. I wanted to use music from different books/ movie adaptations. Then I went to see [the new] Wonder Woman [movie], and it was all over. I changed my mind! I enjoy the different music from all of the other films, and I thought it would be a fun show for the students and the crowd alike. It’s not all of the typical music, but it’s so much fun. This year we have 60 students in winds, percussion, and colorguard. We also have 7 band-aides, which are student helpers from the 7th and 8th grade band. This [being a band-aide] gives them an opportunity to see what high school band is like before they move up.”

Her voyage in being Magee High School’s band director took her to two different stops first, Lamar Christian School and Tylertown High School. We are delighted she chose to be with us at Magee High School.

The Pride of Simpson County will be performing their show at Oak Grove High School on October 6th to compete for rankings and to prepare for state competition on October 13th at Pearl High School.
