I always like those articles that tell about what happened during the year. I’m like…”really, I had forgotten that.”

I just did a quick look back on MageeNews for 2017. MageeNews is a neat way to keep up with the happenings in the past and present!

Here’s just a few of the things that caught my eye!

June 5, 2025

January brought the news that Jimmy Clyde would not seek reelection for Mayor of the City of Magee. Curtis Skiffer was elected president of the Simpson County Board of Supervisors. Stacey Herrin was elected president of the Simpson County School Board.

February: Dale Berry announces candidacy for Mayor of Magee. Matthew Hickman, Angel Brister, ad Whitney Baker announce their candidacy for alderman positions in Magee. Real Pure Bottling, Inc. purchases the bottling company in Magee. Mendenhall basketball team won the district title. SCA Cougars baseball team heading to state. Dollar General Open a second store. Paul Arnold announces for Alderman-at-Large Position.

March: Finally, a groundbreaking ceremony is held for the building of the new Magee Elementary. We got turf at the Sportsplex. Mendenhall basketball team continues to advance in play-offs. Trojans sweep the Simpson County Classic. Chamber of Commerce banquet was held. Suzy Thames was named Outstanding Citizen and Shirley Maddox Spirit of Magee. Barbara Magee and Edith Polk were named to the Chamber Hall of Fame. Dr. Buddy Keys, FBC Pastor, announces retirement. Lane Steele and Patrick Brown announce run for re-election for alderman. Ian Cowart named Chamber president.

April: Christin King named Magee’s Miss Hospitality. MageeNews.com host “From My Point of View” a live political discussion. Simpson County Board of Supervisors recognized as Ally of the Year by the Simpson County Development Foundation. Dr. Tom Duncan hired as new principal at Magee High School. Simpson Central Archery Team wins 10th State title and advances to the National Championship

May: Active Shooter Training was held at the Simpson County Court House (I attended this event and it was quite an eye opener!). Dale Berry was elected mayor in the first primary. Angel Brister was elected Alderman at Large in the first primary. Matthew Hickman elected alderman. The Fireman’s Challenge was held at the Sportsplex. Terrell Lucky was hired as new principal at Magee Middle School. Allen Moore named Top Cop in Mendenhall. Billy Seghini named Top Cop in Simpson County.

June: Simpson Central Archery team wins National Championship. PeopleBank presented SBA award. Whitney Baker elected Alderman. Reception held for retiring Mayor Jimmy Clyde. Farmers Market and Splash Pad Opens.

July: Mayor and Board took oath of office: Dale Berry, mayor; Angel Brister, Alderman at Large; Whitney Baker, Alderman Ward 1; Matthew Hickman, Alderman Ward 2; Lane Steele, Alderman Ward 3, and Patrick Brown, Alderman Ward 4. Sunday beer sales was approved at the first City Board Meeting. Love’s Truck Stop Opens. Downtown Mural sponsored by the Magee Chamber of Commerce completed. Magee 7U All-stars win World Series. Music on Main becomes a reality thanks to the Magee Chamber. Dedication of the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex.

August: The new Magee Elementary Opens door! Sunday Beer Sales began. MGH under new leadership with Trilogy Healthcare Solutions. Love’s has grand opening and ribbon cutting. Football begins! Mark and Angel Brister purchase Sears in Magee.

September: City Adopts Keep Magee Beautiful. Recognition of RealPure Bottling by SCDF-Governor attends. SCA Softball Team has a great season ending with runner up in the MAIS AAAA Div 2. Several bridges in Simpson County closed

October: Wireless Internet coming to Pinola area. New Hope Bridge reopens. Crazy Day was held and the weather was very cold! Treat Street was held on the same day as Crazy Day. Tanker Truck rolls over causing back up on highway 49 north. Michael Allen was named Firemen of the Year by the Magee Fire Department.

November: Mayor Dale Berry forms Youth Council. SCA football team wins South State Championship. Cigar Smoking is approved in the city. Shoot-out takes place inside the city of Magee. Glendale Blackwell, Jr. escapes cops on a lawn mower. Sportsplex broken into. Greg Reynolds named Simpson County Chief Deputy. The Dollar General on highway 28 was robbed. Larry and Dorothy Partridge sell the Magee McDonalds.

December: Dusty Drennan named Constable. SNOW!!!
S&W Grocery in Pinola robbed. Tim Coats, Magee High School AD and Head Coach, resigns. County Christmas parades huge success. Simpson County School board announces it will deed the old elementary school property to the City of Magee.
