William Carey University’s School of Business hosted the 1st Annual Culinary Arts Competition at King Student Center on April 16. The aspiring chefs were culinary arts students from Pine Belt high schools – Lamar County, Hattiesburg, North Forrest, Petal and Wayne County.
Each team prepared sampler plates for judging by experienced chefs and industry professionals, who evaluated their dishes for taste, food pairing, presentation, creativity, technical execution, and safety standards.
The first-place winners were: North Forrest High School in the appetizer category; Petal High School in the entrée category; and Lamar County Schools in the dessert category. Hattiesburg, North Forrest and Lamar County won “People’s Choice” awards from the audience.
Dr. Robert Thompson, dean of the WCU School of Business, announced that a new major will be offered in fall 2026 – a bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in hospitality.
Each participating school received a $400 contribution to support their culinary programs – provided by generous local sponsors.
