Wolves Earn Come From Behind Win Over Bears

By:  Kevin Kyzar

SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Men’s soccer team took to the road to face off against Southwest on Tuesday, September 27. The Wolves rallied late in the match to earn a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Bears.

The first half saw the two teams account for a combined four shots on goal as both Wolves scoring chances were saved while reigning MACCC Goalie of the Week, Leo Summers (Cornwall, England), kept the Bears off the board by grabbing two saves of his own. The first half ended with no score for either side.

The second half saw the Bears get on the board first in the 77th minute; however, the Wolves responded in the 81st minute as sophomore forward Hardy Lewis beat the Bears keeper with an assist from sophomore midfielder Zach Sorey (Florence) to tie the game at 1-1.

The Wolves then took the lead in the 85th minute as sophomore midfielder Will Ballenger found the back of the net with a goal from a free kick to give the Wolves a 2-1 advantage. The Wolves then stalled out the Bears for the final minutes of the match to earn the 2-1 victory.

“We played great and created multiple scoring chances in the first half, but we just couldn’t finish those early chances as well as we would have liked to,” said Co-Lin head coach Tom Cosgrave. “We have been talking to the team all year about their reactions when things aren’t going according to plan. The boys stuck to our plan and found a way to win against a very organized Southwest team.”

Leo Summers finished the game allowing one goal with four saves on five total shots faced throughout the match.

Co-Lin improves to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play and will return to action hosting Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Friday, September 30. The action on the pitch between the Bulldogs and the Wolves will kickoff at 3 p.m., at Stone Stadium.
