In the sixth week of the 2022-23 College Football Season, the whole nation had a weekend of surprising wins and losses, as did Mississippi’s 9 universities and 7 junior colleges. From Mississippi State to Southwest MS CC, Mississippi hosted some thrilling rivalry games. Outside the state, in Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina, the thrillers kept coming, even with one team losing away.
In the FBS world, Southern Miss traveled to Troy for their first Sun Belt Conference matchup. Troy led the Golden Eagles 10-7 at halftime, but Southern Miss couldn’t muster up the offense or defense after halftime and fell to the Troy Trojans 27-10. Next is #23 MS State. The Bulldogs hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks at Davis Wade Stadium and put on an amazing show against a program that was ranked as high as #10 this season but fell out due to crippling losses. MS State rallied up to beat the Razorbacks 40-17. Finally, we have #9 Ole Miss. The Rebels rode the “Lane Train” (a reference to Lane Kiffin’s success at Ole Miss) to Nashville to face the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vandy has had an unusually good season, scoring over 100 points in their first two games, and was leading the Rebels 20-17 at halftime. However, this did not put out the fire, and Ole Miss came back to top Vandy 52-28.
In the Mississippi FCS world, Deion Sander’s JSU Tigers traveled to Alabama State for ASU’s Homecoming. What ASU expected to be a traditional homecoming win did not come easy, as Jackson State topped the Hornets 26-12. Next, Alcorn State traveled to Itta Bena to face the no-win MS Valley State Delta Devils. The Delta Devils were desperately looking for their first win of the season but ultimately could not find it in their 30-7 loss against the Braves.
For Mississippi’s Division 2 schools, Mississippi College hosted the Shorter Hawks and rallied a 35-21 win over the Hawks. The Delta State Statesmen traveled to Tigerville, South Carolina to face North Greenville. The Statesmen grabbed a 47-14 win and advanced to their first 6-0 start since 2007. In Division 3, Belhaven faced North Carolina Wesleyan at home and won 24-0, and the Millsaps Majors faced Hendrix at home and pulled off a 38-24 win over the Warriors.
