Funeral services for Veattress McAlpin Gardner will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 3:00 PM at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Mt Olive, MS. Visitation will be held from 1pm until service time. Dr. Bob Phillips and Bro. Joe Gardner will officiate, and burial will follow in Sharon Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Magee, MS.

Mrs. Gardner, 102, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Magee, MS. She was the last surviving of the 10 children of Lawrence Murphy McAlpin and Nancy Citture Ware McAlpin of the Concord Community in Smith County.
Married in 1931 to Thomas Eastman Gardner of the Hopewell Community in Simpson County, who died in 1980, Mrs. Gardner before retirement worked at Calhoun Company in Mt. Olive and at McAlpin’s in Magee. A 75-plus year member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, she was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, training union director and served on search committees. She was also a past grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, founding member and past president of JOY group of Mt Olive.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, William Mack and Linda of Madison; Robert Nelson and Marcia of Montgomery, Texas, and Daniel Thomas and Nancy of Auburn, Alabama; eight grandchildren – Rick and Heather Gardner, Ginger and Stephen Samson, Terri and Kenny Phillips, Rob Gardner, Kyle and Colleen Gardner, Sophia and Chris Corder, Ginny Gardner Atwood, and Tom and Natasha Gardner; and 18 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
