USM Nursing Students Participate in Project to Help Area Homeless
College of Nursing students at The University of Southern Mississippi completed a service learning project recently in conjunction with a program to assist the homeless population of the Hattiesburg area.
The program, titled “Project Homeless Connect,” was held Oct. 24 at the Salvation Army offices in Hattiesburg. More than 50 nursing students under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Chin-Nu Lin joined forces with Volunteer Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt Homeless Coalition to provide services and information for the homeless.
“Our students conducted vital signs checking which included blood pressure and pulse rate,” said Lin. “We also provided psychotherapies in posters for the participants and answered a variety of medical questions. Overall, the project was very successful for the students and for the event itself.”
Lin notes that the coordinated project helped ensure that participants received holistic care in a dignified setting.
