The Magee Trojans defeated a tough and talented Columbia team Friday, November 27, 2020 at Trojan Field to clinch the title of South State Champions.
Rain was in the forecast and had been a factor the whole day. The rain did not affect the attendance for either team playing. A sell out crowd, (sell out for COVID guidelines), was in attendance.
The wet field played a large factor in the game.
Magee won the toss and elected to receive the ball second half. Magee kicked off to the Columbia Wildcats to start the game.
The night was a defensive type game. Both teams defense played hard. During the first quarter Columbia was driving the ball down field to fumble on the Trojans 28 yard line. Magee recovered the ball and took over on possession. Magee was not able to capitalized on the advantage. Columbia would get the ball back. A bad snap on 4th down gave the Trojans great field possession.
Neither team would score during the first quarter. Second quarter Magee was driving and in scoring position when the Trojans would fumble on the Columbia 2 yard line. Columbia takes over possession. Trojans defense would hold strong and have a punt.
With 6:42 left in the half Magee would cross the goal line first on a pass from #2 Chandler Pittman to #7 Zay Franks. The point after attempt by #35 Gavin Chapin was dead on to give the Trojans the lead 7-0.
Columbia received great field possession on downs and was able to punch the ball in the end zone on a pass with :14 remaining before halftime. The two-point conversion was no good. Trojans would take the lead headed into half time by a score of 7-6.
Third quarter Columbia would drive deep into the Trojans territory to fumble the ball. Magee would take over possession. Again, Magee was not able to take advantage of the turnover. Third quarter proved to be a defensive quarter.
Magee’s defense would intercepted a ball from the wildcats in the fourth quarter. With 5:08 left in regulation Magee would finally capitalize on the recovery and find the end zone one last time on the evening on a pass from #2 Pittman to #7 Franks. The point after attempt by Chapin was spot on. The Trojans increase their lead by a score of 14-7.
The fans was cheering and celebrating what looked to be a sealer for the Trojans.
Magee would take over on possessions with 1:30 left in regulations. A bad snap deep in their own territory would cause Magee to down the ball and bring up a punt giving the wildcats great field position. The Trojan defense stepped up and continued doing what they had done all night and defend the ball. Magee would intercept the ball with seconds left on the clock to seal the win and give the Trojans the title of South State Champs.
Head Coach Teddy Dyess stated “our players just refused to lose Friday night. A game like that comes down to one or two plays and we made those plays when we had to.”
Magee will play for the State Championship title Friday, December 4, 2020 at Jackson Memorial Stadium at 11:00 a.m.
Magee will face a strong and talented Noxubee County team. The Tigers have one loss to West Point who is playing for the State Title in 5A from the North.
