It is with profound sadness that the family of Thomas (Tom) Hershel Morgan announces his peaceful passing on May 5, 2021, at the age of 90 years. He loved his Lord and desired to serve Him. Even in his diminished health, he was a living testimony to his Lord and Savior.
He was the founder of Smallberry Manufacturing, established in 1982. He invented, patented, and manufactured equipment for industrial and municipal water and wastewater facilities across the South.
Active in the community, he was a founding member of Simpson Academy and served as the school’s first board president. Throughout his life, he faithfully served his church family as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader. He enjoyed many mission trips to Belize, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Mississippi, where he presented the gospel to youth and adults.
Tom was a man of many passions and talents, including his natural artistic abilities. In his early years, he created art in the form of many paintings and sketches. Most recently, he had become best known for his beautiful pottery and stained glass, creating many pieces for his friends and family. While he created several from patterns and photographs that inspired him, the majority of his pieces were unique designs, created for a specific recipient.
Tom was also a family man who enjoyed traveling in his motor home and spending time with his grandchildren at family events and holidays. With a large family to feed, Tom became known for his special recipe of seafood gumbo. Truly a labor of love, Tom would spend hours perfecting his seafood gumbo for his family and friends to enjoy. At just about every gathering—from family to church—Tom’s seafood gumbo was a special request! Just like his art, he delighted in creating this dish for everyone he loved to enjoy.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Linda Doss Morgan, Mendenhall, MS, and his children, Hershel Morgan (Sandy), Clinton, MS; Allana Ruby (Chris), Evergreen, CO; David Morgan (Jan), Starkville, MS; John Morgan (Penny), Mendenhall, MS; Lezlie Chalk (William), Mendenhall, MS; Michael Doss (Brenda), Pheba, MS; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Sabrey Morgan, of Mendenhall, MS.
A celebration of Tom’s homegoing will be held at First Baptist Church Magee on Monday, May 10, 2021. Visitation will be held from 1:00-3 p.m. with service at 3:00 p.m., followed by interment at Mendenhall City Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Global Outreach, PO Box 1, Tupelo, MS.
The family would like to thank Dr. Frank Wade and his staff at Family Medical Clinic and Sta-Home Hospice, especially Jennifer, Megan, Kevin and Charlton for their tender loving care of Tom.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.
