Day 13
“Hot on the Block”
Wow, what can I say…Magee will always be famous for “the block.” For the ones who are not familiar with the block…just let me tell you…back in the 80’s and 90’s…all the young people would ride around the block of Main Street that contains the library, the community house, and stores. Literally, that is what people did…they rode the block. Soon, young people started gathering in the side parking lot of the First Baptist Church…also on the “Hill” next to the Community House…know as “Thug Hill.” People from all over Mississippi came and rode the block at Magee. Ridding the block was a great way to see and meet people. As the years passed, the block became a place where “not nice” things were going on…so after numerous complaints and problems…the block was “shut down.” Several years ago, Yancey Sanford formed a Block Reunion…and it was fun! Adults rode in the cars they had ridden in during high school…people dressed the part…I don’t know who had more fun…the “old” folks or the “young” folks. The Block Reunion was a great way to take your child back in time.
The Block Reunion is no more…maybe we should start again…
These are a few pictures of one of the Block Reunions.
As for me, I loved the block for my children and their friends…I always knew where to find them!
This was fun times and lots of memories were made there, my husband and I met riding the block , back in the 80’s. He heard about the block from his friends, they came from Brandondon, long time ago ?
