The local tennis community came together March 3 to support one of their own. The Simpson County Tennis Association organized a tennis mixer fundraiser to benefit Tate Clayburn. Tate is a senior at Simpson Academy and has been a member of the SCA varsity tennis team. Last year, Tate was diagnosed with a brain tumor and has recently begun treatments at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Many members of the local tennis community, including Tate himself, joined together for friendly tennis competition and fellowship in what turned out to be perfect weather conditions. 26 players, ranging in age from 16 to 75 joined in the fun. Co-chairs, Johnny White and Brent Craft came up with the idea of the mixer, stating it was one small way the local tennis community could come together and help Tate. The mixer was held at the Magee City Courts, where Chris Murphy served as tournament director. In a controversial decision, Mr. Murphy ruled himself the winner, edging Keith Maddox and Christian Carrico by 1 game. Maddox is considering filing a formal protest. The SCTA, local high school tennis teams, and tournament volunteers all wish Tate the best and pray for a speedy recovery.
