The May 4, 2026, Simpson County Board of Supervisors meeting was called to order by President Wayne Womack. Ted Warren led in prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Tim Gray, Chancery Clerk brought the following items before the Board:

Items were approved with a change to a one-year tax exemption.
Road Department Actions Highlight May 4 Meeting
At the May 4, 2026 meeting, county officials addressed several items concerning the Road Department, including personnel updates, equipment rentals, and infrastructure repairs.
A motion was approved to accept the Road Report for the month of April.
In personnel matters, Dustin Brewer was hired as a part-time employee at a rate of $14.45 per hour. Officials also discussed promotional pay increases, though specific details were not outlined in the report.
Supervisors approved a motion to rent a street sweeper from Herc Rentals at a cost of $2,430 per month. The rental falls under an existing agreement and is lower than the state contract rate of $2,700 per month.
Discussion also centered on the rental of a motor grader equipped with a 14-foot moldboard. Two quotes were received, with Stribling Equipment submitting the lowest bid at $8,023.70 per month, along with a $500 delivery fee each way. A competing quote from Puckett Machinery totaled $8,500 per month, with delivery and pickup charges of $390 each way.
Officials also moved forward with repairs to a headwall on bridge #SA64-0000000123. The estimated cost for the project is $48,100. Additional work includes steel pile repair and encasement at $58,400 and bridge cap repairs totaling $3,500.
In other business, supervisors approved a quote of $4,850 from Refrigerated Trailer Solutions to install an air conditioning unit on a CAT motor grader.

Tax Assessor Presents Monthly Report
Simpson County Tax Assessor Jamie Brewer presented the department’s monthly report during the recent meeting, outlining several routine items for approval.
The report included the approval of the Solid Waste report for the month of April, along with the surrendered tag list for April. Brewer also submitted real property assessments for the 2025 tax year.
All items were presented as part of the regular reporting process.
Supervisors Approve Claims, Contracts, and Set Upcoming Schedule
The Simpson County Board of Supervisors handled a full agenda during its Monday, May 4, 2026 meeting, approving financial items, equipment actions, and scheduling future events and meetings.
Among the primary actions, the board approved the Claims Docket totaling $371,529.71. Supervisors also authorized the continued extension of an emergency order for bridge repairs, signaling ongoing infrastructure needs across the county.
Several county assets were declared surplus, including multiple pieces of equipment and inventory items. The board also approved advertising for sealed bids on surplus assets, with bids scheduled to be opened during the June 1, 2026 board meeting at 8:00 a.m.
In personnel-related matters, the board approved the destruction of Accounts Payable files from Fiscal Year 2021. Additionally, surplus equipment identified as asset 4144 was approved for sale to retired officer Jeff Smith for $1.00, in accordance with state code.
Supervisors considered a renewal contract for ambulance services with Covington County Hospital. The agreement reflects an increase from the current monthly rate of $21,318.00 to $25,484.67 per month, including a 2% annual inflation adjustment. (The matter was tabled)
Financial adjustments included the approval of a journal entry transfer of $5,275.59 from the Food Stamps/Welfare line item to Youth Court Fines to correct a coding error.
The board also addressed routine approvals such as travel expenses, purchase requests, and the issuance of claims and checks.
In other business, supervisors approved monthly quotes for asphalt and gravel for May 2026, including supplemental quotes from JAMH Logging, LLC. The board noted that alternate vendors may be used when primary suppliers are unavailable, with priority given to the lowest available bid.
Additional acknowledgments included the Simpson County Park Commission’s March 2026 financial report and confirmation that all supervisors have inspected the Simpson County Jail in compliance with state law.
From the Chancery Clerk’s report, the board acknowledged the retrieval of a signed EMSOF funding agreement and received correspondence from the Smith County Board of Supervisors regarding proposed amendments to its solid waste management plan for a tire disposal site.
A previously approved pay increase for Robin Sutton—from $18.50 to $20.50 per hour—was formally acknowledged. The board also authorized signatures for several audit-related documents, including representation letters, risk assessments, and actuarial reports tied to post-employment benefits.
Progress reports were also received from the Office of State Aid Road Construction, noting 43.21% completion on SAP-64(21)S and 44.06% completion on SAP-64(24)S projects.

Sealed bids for the sale of surplus vehicles will be accepted until June 1, 2026 at 8:00 a.m.
