Simpson County Board of Supervisors met Thursday, February 15, 2018.
Road Manger Ben Warren expressed a concern about litter located on several county roads. The trash is an eye sore to the county and community. Warren expressed his desire to see the litter problem stopped. County crews work to clean roads and within a few days litter will reappear.
Tommy Joe Harvey advised maintenance of completed state aid projects and scheduled annual maintenance inspections are set for Wednesday May 24, 2018.
City of Magee and representatives from Mississippi Department of Corrections addressed the board with concerns of City of Magee losing their prisoner work force due to ruling last week from the state to move all TVC centers to the Delta Correctional Facility in Leflore County.
Magee Mayor Dale Berry asked the board for help with county inmate workers due to losing the TVC prisoners which are housed in the City of Magee. The City of Magee uses anywhere from 8 inmates in the winter to 15 during the summer. The loss of these inmates will take a hard financial hit on the city. Simpson County, City of Mendenhall, City of D’Lo, and City of Braxton work prisoners housed in the County jail. The board explained that several county inmates are used to assist the county in work on garbage trucks, road crews, and kitchen work at jail. City of Magee will need county prisoners.
Sheriff O’Cain requested a pay increase for Certified dispatchers Austin Moore, Danielle Brown, and Jamie Burkett. A pay increase was requested for Certified Detention officer Theresa Parman. Both pay increases were approved. A request was approved to send Neil Wailes to Meridian for Re-certification of Taser use on April 10, 2018 at a cost of $225.00.
The board tabled a discussion considering adopting a culvert policy for the county. The county spent $164,000 last year in culverts. An investigation into how other counties are charging and handling culvert problems will be done between now and next months board meeting in an attempt to get a better understanding of what type culvert policy to adopt.
A special board meeting will be held February 21, 2018 at 10:00 with Copiah Lincoln Community College regarding Simpson campus.
