I-S-I-N-G-L-A-S-S, and with the correct spelling of that word in the 24th round of competition, Angelina Sun of Mendenhall Junior High outlasted over twenty other spellers to win the Simpson County School DIstrict Spelling Bee. Hosted by Co-Lin and organized by the gifted program (FLAG) teachers in the district, the spelling bee this year featured a challenging array of words of foreign origin. *By the way, isinglass is a gelatin derived from fish – in case you were wondering!

Spelling Bee Winners from left to right 5th place Keyara Durr, Magee Middle; 4th place Kharlie McCullum, Simpson Central; 3rd place Taylor Lofton, Magee Elementary; 2nd place Hannah Warren, Magee Middle; and 1st place winner Angeline Sun, Mendenhall Junior High.

Thanks to the FLAG Program teachers for organizing the event and People’s Bank for sponsoring recognition items for all the participants.
