Watson told those in attendance that one of the primary goals of his office is to serve the people of Mississippi and encouraged citizens to reach out whenever they need assistance.
“I want to help people,” Watson said, emphasizing that his office is available to answer questions and resolve issues affecting Mississippians.
A large portion of his presentation focused on election security and integrity, one of the Secretary of State’s primary responsibilities. Watson stressed the important role that county election commissioners and circuit clerks play in conducting fair, secure, and accurate elections throughout the state.
According to Watson, Mississippi has improved its national ranking for election integrity, moving from 26th to 11th during his time in office. He said his priorities include ensuring that only U.S. citizens vote in Mississippi elections, requiring voter-verified paper ballots for all voting machines, conducting post-election audits, and banning ballot harvesting.
Watson also highlighted several initiatives launched during his administration. He created the Tackle the Tape initiative to help businesses identify and reduce unnecessary regulations. He also authored the Fetal Protection Act, legislation that strengthened penalties for injuring an unborn child.
In addition, Watson completed an 82-county tour of Mississippi, meeting with local circuit clerks and election commissioners to better understand the needs and challenges facing election officials across the state. Other initiatives include the Secretary of State Student Ambassador Program and the formation of the Conservation Task Force, which brings together state leaders and wildlife conservation experts to address conservation issues.
Watson announced that he is a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi. He is currently serving his second term as Mississippi’s 36th Secretary of State after previously representing District 51 in the Mississippi State Senate.
