Rumor is that Bassfield High School and Prentiss High will consolidate next year
Also, Lumberton High will consolidate with Lamar and Pearl River Counties, and Richton High will combine with Perry County.
Simpson County Superintendent of Education, Greg Paces, confirmed that the Bassfield/Prentiss high school will be built in Carson.
Should Simpson County consolidate Magee and Mendenhall High Schools? The topic has been discussed or “pitched around” for years. Now seems to be the time to get serious.
Robbie Barnes served on the Advisory Committee concerning the building of Magee Elementary School and growth of schools in our county.
“The Simpson County School Board appointed an Advisory Committee last summer to help determine a suitable location for the new Magee Elementary School. I, along with several others from the county including the Magee and Mendenhall area, served on this committee. We presented our report to the Board in August 2015, however in addition to our report, we also presented a supplemental report where we recommended that the School Board consider conducting a feasibility study to determine the economic and social benefits to the district and the community related to consolidating the Magee and Mendenhall High Schools. I have attached a copy of this report for your review since it was presented in an open meeting of the School Board. At that time, the School Board and the Administration felt like they were too far down the road on their commitment to build a new Magee Elementary School to give full consideration to this recommendation.
If Simpson County is going to remain competitive with our surrounding counties, when it comes to attracting economic development and offering families who live in or who may want to locate in our county the same educational options as counties such as Rankin and Madison, we need to strongly consider the consolidation of these two high schools. We have some really great people working in our public school system and they, along with the citizens of Simpson County, deserve a consolidated state of the art facility with adequate resources to provide the highest quality education possible.
As a member, I would encourage the Simpson County Development Foundation to take an active leadership role in this effort since our local economy is directly tied to the educational opportunities that are available to our citizens and future business prospects.”
