Riley Myers, former Ole Miss stand out and high school coach, died in an accident Monday in Magee. Many of you may not know Riley or know that he even lived in Magee. Riley Myers is one of Dr. Wyck Neely’s best friends. Wyck convinced Riley and his wife Cathy to retire in Magee!

According to Simpson County Coroner Terry Tutor, Riley died as the result of an accident. Riley and Wyck were attempting to cut a limb from a big tree when part of the tree fell on Myers.

Many Ole Miss fans remember Riley’s five-yard touchdown pass he caught from Archie Manning in the famous “Archie Who” game against The Tennessee Volts. Tennessee was heavily favored to win the 1969 game, but the Rebels defeated the Volts 38-0 in Jackson.

Riley was a member of the “Dirty Thirty” and “M Club” while at Ole Miss. He was a top receiver for quarterback Archie Manning. Myers caught 74 passes for 898 yards and nine touchdowns during his time as an Ole Miss Rebel.

For 13 years, Myers was a successful football coach at Pillow Academy in Greenwood. After leaving Pillow, Riley moved to Oxford and then retired in Magee.

I “knew of” Riley during his Ole Miss days and was aware that he was back in Magee. Riley and Cathy built their home on Highway 28 near Wyck and Brenda’s home. The Myers were attending First Baptist Church in Magee.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at First Baptist Church, Magee, MS, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with the service following at 3:00 p.m.  Ole Miss colors or casual attire is requested.

A family/friend meal is scheduled for 12 PM at the Family Life Center of FBC. Anyone wishing to bring food, may do so at the Family Life Building before noon.

In lieu of flowers, the family request any memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Full Obituary

Special prayers for this family and especially Wyck. Anyone who knows Wyck knows he is a private person. Riley and Wyck intended to grow old together. The bonds of friendship are strong. The loss of a friend changes a person.

St. John Cassian, Christian monk:  “
The bond between friends cannot be broken by chance; no interval of time or space can destroy it. Not even death itself can part true friends.”
