Raymond Geary Miller passed away on December 2, 2024, at Simpson General Hospital. He was born on December 18, 1944, in Forest City, North Carolina.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 ½ years, Jacquelyn Putnam Miller, and his daughters, Kathy Van Cleave and husband Brad of Mize, Mississippi, and Kandace Gibson and husband Scott of Pleasant Valley, Iowa; Grandchildren, Andrew, Joey, and Thomas Gibson, and Ashton and Kristin Van Cleave; Sister, Marjorie Miller Rothell and husband Steve, Brother, Max Miller and wife Susan, and Brother-in-law, Chris Putnam and wife Teri and a host of nieces and nephews in North Carolina and Florida.
He graduated from East Rutherford High School and was selected as the most talented member of the Senior Class of 1963. He attended Gardner Webb (College) University, where he earned an associate’s degree in Agricultural Science before enlisting in the United States Navy. Geary served in the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1969 – 1972 and attained the rank of AT 2. After serving in the Navy as an electrical technician, he and his wife relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he worked for General Electric. He then became employed with Servomation Food Services, where he began a 45-year career in the Food Service industry. He was named the Cygnus Annual Route Driver of the Year in 2009. He retired from full-time work in 2015 and part-time in 2019. He recently enjoyed working part-time for Schaub Flooring in Magee, Mississippi.
He served faithfully as a Deacon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Duluth, Georgia, and Central Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He taught Sunday School and collectively served as Sunday School director for over 20 years. Recently, he was a faithful member of the Jimmy Riley Sunday School Class and Silvertones of First Baptist Church of Magee, Mississippi. He was known for his gentle spirit and overall kindness to strangers. He faithfully served his family and led by example. From giving a ride to co-workers to training students to learn the audio-visual system at church, he was known as someone generous with his time and attention. He never met a stranger.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Magee, MS from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. The service will be at 11:00 am in Tutor Chapel with Brother Barry Corbett. Inurnment will follow at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton, MS at a later date.
