Magee Board of Alderman held a public hearing at the beginning of their board meeting Tuesday, July 18, 2023. The property in discussion is located at 1400 1st Ave NE, Magee, MS. The property is in such a state of uncleanliness as to be a menace to the public health, safety, and welfare of the community under Miss. Code Ann. Section 21-19-11. Representatives of the 1st Assembly of God were present. The property owners have demolition scheduled for July 24, 2023. Power has been pulled from the property in preparation for the demo.  The property will be for sale.

Mayor Berry reminded citizens that the city only picks up limbs and garbage for paying customers.  If you do not receive a water bill, your items will not be picked up.

Progress on the Colonial Drive culvert is being made.

The board approved the appointments of adding Braden Lambert and Heather McKenzie to the zoning board.

Jimmy Zila, Park Director, advised there was a good turn out for the firework show that was rescheduled from the 4th of July.

Ashley Steele, Airport Manager, reported there are still issues with the fuel tank at the airport. A request to Revell has been submitted and are awaiting an inspection to determined the cause and how to correct the problem.

Mayor Dale Berry reminded the public of the Special Election for Ward 2 to fill the alderman vacancy. The election is set for Tuesday, August 15, 2023. Only two candidates have qualified at this time. The candidates are Joe Worrell and Lawana Thompson.

Phillip Magee presented the board with new codes to adopt. The codes are attached below. The board tabled the decision until they were able to study the codes and make sure they are the proper fit for the city. Magee reported he is working with the Woodman of the World in securing a new pole and flag for the Magee Library.

New Ipads are being purchased for the each board member. The Ipads will allow the board access to needed documents and reporting of needed work items in their wards. The board approved purchasing Ipads 12 pros at a cost of $5245.

Representatives of the Magee Consolidated-Magee Vocational Attendance Center,  Coach Earnest Jaynes and Dr. Anika Floyd, came before the board asking for assistance for the McLaurin Museum that will be located in the old Magee Elementary Building. The group requested  during the upcoming budget sessions  to research and see if any financial help can be provided for the project.

Melinda Green met before the board and asked if the Senior Citizen building could be utilized additional days for the seniors to gather and socialize. Additional details are needed before making a decision.

Approval was granted to hire Edward Ross for the public works department and to move Blake Sullivan as the Assistant Supervisor.

Susan Walker representative for the Citizens for a better Magee questioned the board on the status of a strategic plan. The Mayor advised they had a plan and would provide the plan to her after the meeting. The Mayor stated the plan is a 10 year plan. Walker asked the procedure for the new form to obtain public record.

The meeting ended and the board entered executive session.
