On June 20, 2023, a public hearing was held to determine whether the property located at 1403 1st Ave. NE in Magee is in such a state of uncleanliness as to be a menace to the public health, safety and welfare of the community under Miss. Code Ann. Section 21-19-11.

The property in question is the First Assembly of God church and is owned by the Assemblies of God, which responded to the hearing with a letter presented to the board by Shane Steele.

The letter asked the board to allow the Assemblies of God to clean, restore and prepare the sanctuary for use by a church or other ministry and demolish the adjacent building. The letter requested six months for the completion of the renovation.

Alderman Sammie Tebo expressed concern that the city should see progress soon, and Alderman Mark Grubbs suggested the board “give them thirty days. The least they can do is start cleaning it up.”

Steel told the board, “The sanctuary is not that bad.” He added, “It is for sale.”

Mark Grubbs also said, “They need to come back before the board.”

The board agreed and set another hearing for July 18 to review the progress of the renovation project.
