MDOT projects make progress in southwest Mississippi

MCCOMB, MISS. – Commissioner Charles Busby, Southern Transportation District, has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in southwest Mississippi.
“Southwest Mississippi is moving forward, and by devoting resources to infrastructure, we lay the groundwork for future growth,” said Busby. “Daily progress is being made, and every project completed represents an investment in our communities, our workforce and our future, and we’re committed to continued momentum.”
Major resurfacing project on I-55 in Pike County
Crews continue to make progress on a large, $76 million infrastructure project in Pike County to resurface five miles of I-55 from State Route 24 to U.S. 98, construct two roundabouts on U.S. 98 at the I-55 interchange and raise four bridges over I-55.
Bridge work and roundabout construction is complete and open to traffic. On I-55, long-term lane closures have been reopened, and short-duration, alternating lane closures can be expected while crews complete paving.
The project is expected to improve interstate traffic safety and optimize traffic flow at the U.S. 98 interchange. The contract was awarded to Barriere Construction of Laplace, La. and should wrap up in 2027.
Bridge replacements on U.S. 98 in Marion County
As part of a $57.7 million project on U.S. 98 in Marion County, eastbound and westbound bridges over the Pearl River are being replaced. Bank stabilization is also part of the scope of work.
With the eastbound bridge now complete, the westbound bridge is under construction. Crews are demolishing the existing westbound bridge, building work platforms, tying steel reinforcements for drilled shafts and pouring shafts on the east end of the bridge.
The contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace of Columbia and is expected to be completed in 2027.
Bridge replacement on State Route 149 nearing completion in Simpson County
The State Route 149 Strong River bridge is now open to traffic with minor tasks remaining. This bridge replacement is the last in a project to replace four bridges on State Route 149 between State Route 13 and U.S. 49 in Simpson County.
The $25 million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace. Phase I of the project wrapped up in 2025, and Phase II is estimated to be complete in summer 2026.
Bridge replacement on U.S. 98 continues in Franklin County
On a bridge replacement project on the U.S. 98 bridge over the Homochitto River in Franklin County, post-tensioning is now complete, and crews are preparing to pour the bridge deck and diaphragms. Site grading is also underway. U.S. 98 is closed between State Route 556 and Berrytown Rd. while construction is ongoing.
This $25.7 million contract was awarded to Key, LLC of Madison and is expected to be completed in late 2026.
Overlay project on I-55 in Pike County
Clearing operations are now underway on a $13 million project to overlay I-55 in Pike County from the Mississippi state line to State Route 568. The scope of work includes clearing, milling existing asphalt and placing two lifts of new asphalt, including a layer of open-graded friction course (OGFC) to the interstate.
The contract was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen of Brookhaven and is anticipated to conclude in fall 2027.
Safety improvement project underway on U.S. 49 in Simpson County
An $11 million project to improve the safety of the U.S. 49 corridor from State Route 13 to just past State Route 149 is underway. The scope of the work includes clearing right-of-way and implementing traffic safety countermeasures at hazardous intersections.
Work is complete on the outside lanes, and crews are now working to construct median crossovers. Work continues on SR 13 and East St.
The project was awarded to T.L. Wallace and is expected to wrap up in fall 2026.
Mill and overlay project on U.S. 84 in Lincoln County
A $7.4 million mill and overlay project is underway in Lincoln County on approximately eight miles of U.S. 84 from Monticello St. NE to the Lawrence County line. Base repairs and clearing operations are complete and asphalt operations are underway.
The project was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen and should be complete in spring 2027.
Overlay project on I-55 in Pike and Lincoln counties
An overlay project on I-55 is complete with the exception of placing permanent stripe. The project runs from just south of the Bogue Chitto interchange (Exit 30) to the U.S. 98 interchange at Summit (Exit 20A) in Pike and Lincoln counties. The scope of work includes clearing trees and removing and replacing a layer of open-graded friction course (OGFC) asphalt to the interstate.
The $7.3 million project was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen.
Seal and overlay project on State Route 501 in Smith County
In Smith County, a project is underway to seal and overlay approximately 16 miles of State Route 501 from State Route 18 to the Scott County line.
The $7.2 million project was awarded to Southern Paving of Foxworth and is anticipated to be complete in summer 2027.
Roundabout construction project underway in Lincoln County
Earthwork, drainage and curb and gutter work is ongoing, and paving will soon begin on a $5.5 million project to construct two roundabouts at the Brookway Blvd. interchange on I-55 in Lincoln County. The scope of work also includes lighting and drainage upgrades and paving. These improvements are expected to enhance safety and traffic flow in the area.
The project was awarded to T.L. Wallace and is expected to conclude this winter.
Overlay project on State Route 550 in Lincoln County
Crews are currently making base repairs on a project that will overlay approximately 11.2 miles on State Route 550 in Lincoln County from the Jefferson County line to east of Bouie Mill Rd.
The $5 million contract was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen and should wrap up in 2027.
Safety improvement project on U.S. 84 in Covington County
A $4.5 million safety improvement project is underway the intersections of U.S. 84 and State Route 184 and U.S. 84 and State Route 588 in Covington County. The scope of work involves constructing Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersections within the project area on U.S. 84. Median island pavement has been poured for both RCUTs and the contractor is working on final asphalt in the new configuration.
The project was awarded to Dunn Roadbuilders of Laurel and is expected to be completed in fall 2026.
Bridge replacement on State Route 481 in Smith County
Work on a bridge replacement project on State Route 481 between State Route 902 and State Route 35 is making steady progress in Smith County. Beams have been set and crews are working on pouring the deck.
The $4.3 million contract was awarded to Joe McGee Construction Company, Inc. of Lake and is expected to wrap up in spring 2027.
Overlay project on State Route 27 in Lawrence County
A $4 million project is underway to overlay approximately 11.7 miles of State Route 27 in Lawrence County from U.S. 84 to the Copiah County line. The contractor has cleared right of way and will soon begin paving operations.
The project was awarded to APAC – Mississippi, Inc. of Richland and should be complete this fall.
Overlay project on State Route 27 in Walthall County
Mainline paving is now complete on a project to overlay approximately eight miles of State Route 27 from the Louisiana state line to High School Dr. in Walthall County. Crews are placing shoulder material and final stripe.
This $3.5 million project was awarded to Barriere Construction and is expected to conclude this fall.
Seal and overlay project on State Route 44 in Marion County
A $3.3 million project to seal and overlay State Route 44 is making steady progress in Marion County. It covers approximately 8.5 miles of SR 44 from near Gates Rd. to the Lamar County line. Mainline paving is complete and the contractor is working on driveways and local roads.
The project was awarded to Warren Paving of Hattiesburg and is anticipated to be complete this fall.
Mill and overlay project on U.S. 84 in Franklin County
A $3 million project is currently underway to mill and overlay 4.2 miles of U.S. 84 from Bude to the Homochitto River bridge in Franklin County. Mainline paving is complete and the contractor is now paving local roads and driveways.
The project was awarded to APAC – Mississippi, Inc. and should be complete this fall.
Bridge repair project now complete on U.S. 98 in Walthall County
A $3 million project to repair four bridges on U.S. 98 near Magees Creek in Walthall County is now complete. The scope of work involved undersealing approach slabs, cap and rail cleaning, installing new guardrail and applying a polymer overlay on bridge numbers 99.0, 99.0B, 99.1 and 99.1B.
The contract was awarded to Key Constructors.
Overlay project complete on State Route 28 in Smith County
An overlay project is now complete on approximately six miles of State Route 28 from Mize to Taylorsville in Smith County.
The $3 million project was awarded to Southern Paving LLC.
Overlay project on State Route 184 and State Route 13 in Jefferson Davis County
Mainline paving is now complete on a project to overlay approximately 4.5 miles on State Route 184 and State Route 13 from U.S. 84 to the end of State Route 184 near U.S. 84 in Jefferson Davis County. Paving is complete, and remaining work includes guardrail and final stripe.
The $2.9 million project was awarded to Walters Construction of Laurel and should be complete this fall.
Overlay on State Route 35 in Smith County
A project to overlay six miles of State Route 35 from State Route 18 to State Route 481 in Smith County is now complete pending the final inspection. The project will improve sight distance and safety in the area.
Hayes General Construction, LLC of Vicksburg was awarded the $2.5 project contract.
Overlay project now completion on U.S. 51 from Osyka to Magnolia in Pike County
A project to overlay U.S. 51 from Osyka to Magnolia in Pike County is now complete.
The $2.6 million project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen.
Seal and overlay project on State Route 24 in Pike County
A project to seal and overlay approximately 3.5 miles of State Route 24 in Pike County is progressing. Seal and overlay are now complete and the contractor is working on paving driveways and local roads.
The $2.1 million project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen and should be finished this summer.
Slide repair on U.S. 61 now complete in Adams County
Work to repair a slide on U.S. 61 S across from Firetower Rd. is now complete in Adams County.
The $2 million project was awarded to Midway Construction Company of Roxie.
Bridge repair complete on U.S. 61 in Adams County
A $1 million project to repair two bridges on U.S. 61 over St. Catherine Creek in Adams County is now complete. The scope of work included placing rip rap on the riverbank, repairing joints, cleaning rails and placing a polymer overlay on the deck.
The project was awarded to Hemphill Construction of Florence.
Mill and overlay project on State Route 24 in Wilkinson County
Only striping remains on a $1 million project to mill and overlay approximately two miles of State Route 24 is ongoing from Lower Woodville Rd. to U.S. 61 in Wilkinson County.
This project was awarded to APAC – Mississippi, Inc. and is expected to wrap up this fall.
