Today, October 6, is National Coaches Day, a day set aside to recognize the men and women who do so much more than teach us how to play a sport.
National Coaches Day dates back to 1972, when President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation recognizing the important role coaches play in the lives of athletes and in communities across the country.
A good coach teaches the fundamentals of the game, but the lessons often go far beyond the field or court. Coaches teach teamwork, discipline, perseverance, responsibility and how to handle both winning and losing. For many young people, a coach becomes a mentor and a positive influence they remember for the rest of their lives.
Think about all the coaches who have given countless hours to practices, games, road trips and young athletes. Some coached championship teams, while others may never have had a winning season—but they still made a difference.
So, on National Coaches Day, MageeNews wants to know: Who was your favorite coach?
Maybe it was a coach who pushed you when you wanted to quit, believed in you when you didn’t believe in yourself, or simply made playing the game fun.
Tell us the coach’s name and why he or she was special to you!
And to all our coaches—past and present—thank you for the difference you make!
