A press release earlier today from the MS Department of Education, State Superintendent, Carey Wright, voiced concerns with the statement from State Auditor, Shad White, yesterday regarding the reporting of student placement after a student completes a 2 year program of study.
Dr. George “Bo” Huffman, Administrator for the Simpson County Technical Center, provided the following procedures that actually take place.
The Technical Center does in fact track student placement after a student completes a two year program of study whether the student is furthering their education in high school, college, or technical school, going to work in the field they were trained in, working in a related field, working in an unrelated field, signing with the military, or not working at all. This is a requirement under the Carl Perkins V Career and Technical Education Act which was approved recently. This must be submitted annually with fidelity for all school district CTE centers/programs to meet the Carl D. Perkins V CTE Act and receive federal funds that are distributed each year across the country for Career and Technical Education. We typically receive $500,000.00-$600,000.00 dollars annually. The majority of these funds are allocated to salaries for CTE instructors, counselors, and administrators. Approximately $30,000.00 of these funds are allocated for the purchase of equipment each year to be used for instructing students enrolled in CTE programs with the primary focus on helping our non-traditional students be successful. These funds can also be utilized for professional development, for the purchase of instructional aids beyond the scope of what the district is required to purchase and for student travel for non-traditional students who place first in student organizational state competitions and who are advancing on to national competitions.
