Greetings from Omaha, Nebraska!
In front of a crowd of 34,758 people MS State saved the best play to the end.
With two on base Luke Alexander hit a deep ball over the right fielders head to score Hunter Stovall with another walk-off win for the bulldogs against Washington by a score of 1-0! The game lasted two hours and thirty-four minutes. During the day it was very hot, close to a hundred degrees, but luckily there was a breeze most of the day and all of the evening game, making the night game enjoyable.
Bananas are everywhere! Fans wore shirts with rally bananas on them, some had plastic bananas on their heads, some dressed in banana costumes, and some just brought bananas that were edible. Someone threw a real banana from the stands and a grounds crew member picked the banana up and ate while waking off the field. The rally banana has really made a statement.
Now, for the ones who have never attended a College World Series it is an experience to remember. Like most bowl and championship games there are so much fan fare located outside the stadium. Games for kids and adults, the most t-shirts I have ever seen for sale, along with other memorabilia. TD Ameritrade stadium is very nice. The turf was very manicured and grounds in excellent condition.
Omaha shows great hospitality to MS State and for good reason. Everywhere you look within Omaha is a sea of Maroon and White. Mississippi State heavily out numbers any other team.
Several hometown people are in attendance for the games. Of course you have the Mangum’s and their families in attendance watching their son. Numerous miles and almost fourteen hours from home, what are the odds of seeing someone from Magee? As soon as Greg and I parked the vehicle and walked two blocks Randy Pace stopped me to speak. He was at the game with his son. Dickey Honea, Sue’s son, and his boys and their friends were in town for the game as well. Former classmate Darren Purser, Paul and Shirley Purser’s son, his wife, Amanda, their children drove up for the game. I was told some other locals had made the drive too. Now let me tell you, I thought it was a long trip to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl, but Omaha definitely beats that. It is a long drive but one that is worth it in the end.
If you have never been to Omaha to the College World Series it is a must to add to the bucket list.
