Multiagency litter cleanup on Interstate 55 in Pike County

SOT Titles: James Brumfield, Pike County Sheriff, and Matt Dugas, MDOT D7 Maintenance Engineer.

MCCOMB, MISS. – On Tuesday, March 29, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) along with multiple other Pike County agencies joined forces to pick up litter along Interstate 55.

The agencies who participated in the cleanup event include: the City of McComb and Public Works Department, the City of Magnolia, the Magnolia Police Department, Pike County, the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the Osyka Police Department, the City of Summit and the Summit Police Department. Around 130 people participated in the event.

“This is an incredible initiative that took a large amount of time and resources to plan and execute, and I am extremely grateful to all of the people who took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer,” said Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District. “Keeping our highways clean is the responsibility of every Mississippian. MDOT can’t do it alone.”

About 17,180 pounds of litter was picked up during the cleanup.

MDOT spends over $3 million each year picking up litter along Mississippi roadways, not counting the costs of decreased property values, decreased commerce and tourism and health risks. That is money that could be used to build and maintain roads and bridges.
