Jackson, Miss.—The final numbers are in: 507 active offers have been extended to buyers, with bids totaling $361,945.49. Seventeen parcels have been sold already, with a total of $37,279 raised.
“While every active offer may not close, preliminary numbers show this auction was a success,” Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said. “Returning long-abandoned properties to the tax rolls, and particularly, to neighbors in the area, is always a win for local communities.”
Money raised in the auction will be distributed to Hinds County, the City of Jackson, and the schools in the area.
“We consider this initiative to be a remarkable success. We are excited about the opportunity to decrease the amount of abandoned properties in our city and increase the number of homeowners in our city,” Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said. “We are grateful for the support of the State and we look forward to future opportunities to demonstrate operational unity.”
Secretary Hosemann launched online auctions in July 2016 to streamline the purchase of properties forfeited to the State for non-payment of ad valorem taxes.
Successful bidders in an auction are notified by e-mail by the Secretary of State’s Office, and payment of the bid amount must be paid within 15 days of notification.
