In the Summer of 79 the group Jefferson Starship was coming to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. I was in my first year at Co-Lin and was dating a young lady from McComb. She loved the song “With Your Love” from the “Spitfire ” album.
I remember our drive from the Copiah-Lincoln campus to Biloxi. We played the tape with the song on it. I remember telling her that the group was originally called Jefferson Airplane and was formed in San Francisco in the 1960’s . That they played much heavier music then, not the sweet love ballads like the one she liked.
She couldn’t believe it, she thought I was making it all up. I explained that after the 60’s drug movement the band had changed several members. The newest members wanted a change of direction with the band with the first change being from Airplane to Starship.
Besides, it was the 70’s now and we had put a man on the moon a decade ago. So the name Starship just seemed a better fit.
We arrived at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum to limited parking and a packed house.
The concert was great. I remember she melted like butter when Marty Balin hit the first note of ” With Your Love”.
I was secretly hoping for some of the old Airplane era songs but I guess when you’re flying a Starship…. it’s best to boldly go where no one has gone before!
