Their career began in 1970 in London, England. Just three guys who were there together because their dads were stationed in London with the US Air Force.
Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek began performing together at live events. Their first album was released in 1971.
I first saw them in concert in 1976 when the song “Sister Golden Hair ” was the #1 song in the land. When they hit the first chord of the song on stage that night, the entire place erupted in screams and applause.
Dan Peek left the group in May of 1977 to pursue a solo career in Christian music and never rejoined the band.
Dewey and Gerry continued the group as a duo but never regained the popularity they enjoyed the same success as the trio did in the 1970’s.
In 1996 , I caught a concert of theirs at Hal and Mal’s in Jackson and even got a chance to have dinner with Dewey and Gerry. They talked about their music career, both the highs and the lows. There was even talk of a reunion with Dan.
Unfortunately, that reunion was not to be. Dan Peek passed away on July 24, 2011 of complications from fibrinous pericarditis at the age of 60.
Dewey and Gerry are still performing and sound as great as ever. If you get a chance to attend one of their shows… do it!
You’ll be glad you did.
