MAGEE TROJANS BASEBALL IS OFF TO EXCITING START

The 2017 edition of Trojan Baseball is young with as many as 6 players in 9th and 10th grade on the field at times during the season. One thing is certain, you will not be disappointed when you come out to the park as these Trojans play with heart, grit and determination. Despite the daunting schedule, the teams’ work ethic and perseverance has paid off with the Trojans winning 5 of their last 6 games bringing their overall record to 8-6 and 2-1 in District play.
The Trojans started this impressive stretch with a thrilling 7-6 win over last year’s 3A runner-up and district foe St. Andrews on March 11th. Dalton Cockrell was named player of game with his impressive outing in pitching 6 innings and giving up only 6 hits. The Trojan crowd erupted when Caleb Brown hit a 2-run shot to right field to give the Trojans the lead. As the fans sat on the edge of their seats, Tucker Sobczak, the lone senior on the team, came in and closed the door on the Saints and earned the save.
The Trojans would continue the momentum on the next day when Freshman, Landon Hayes, pitched a gem against 5A power Germantown giving up only 3 hits in 6 innings. The Trojans took the lead in the top of the 7th with two runs and in consecutive days, Sobczak shut the door to earn the save. Timon Kennedy, Caleb Brown and Dalton Cockrell each had timely hits to help lead the Trojans to the win. The Trojans defense also turned in an error free game.
The only loss in this stretch was to 5A opponent Brookhaven High School 9-8 in a game which the Trojans outhit the Panthers 13-10, played error free baseball, but gave up two home runs that decided the game. Sobczak, Cockrell and Collier each had two hits for the Trojans.
The Trojans would quickly respond defeating Wesson 17-4 and pounding out 21 hits with Seth Russell earning the victory in impressive fashion. Caleb Brown, Dalton Cockrell and Jaden Chatman had multiple hits for the Trojans and Caleb Brown, Dearrius Gray and Seth Russell all had 3 RBIs.
On March 18th, Magee defeated the Mize Bulldogs 15-4. Timely hitting by the Trojans along with aggressive base running made the difference. Aimon Chisholm and Dearrius Gray combined to only give up 5 hits and Gray hit his first home run of the season. Chisholm also turned in an impressive double play showing his versatility from the outfield.
Magee played error free ball on March 21st, winning 12-2 against district opponent McLaurin. Dalton Cockrell struck out 6 and picked up his 3rd win of the season in only giving up two hits. Caleb Brown was named player of game for his offensive show in driving in 4 runs and scoring the 12th run by stealing home. Keshun Collier, Caleb Brown and Dalton Cockrell had multiple hits for the Trojans.
The focus of the Diamond Trojans is all about the team, but there have been some impressive performances by individuals to date. Here are some impressive stats. Freshman, Keshun Collier, leads the District in Stolen Bases (18) and Runs (21) from his lead off position. Sophomore, Timon Kennedy, is second in the District in RBIs (16) and Home Runs (2). Sophomore, Caleb Brown, is 3rd in Slugging Percentage (.744) and 4th in Batting Average (.404). Sophomore, Seth Russell, is 3rd in Batting Average (.500), 5th in Slugging Percentage (.571), 3rd in On Base Percentage (.632) and tied for second with wins (2). Freshman, Landon Hayes, is tied for second in wins as a pitcher, is 4th in ERA (1.56) and has the only no-hitter so far this year in the District. Junior, Dalton Cockrell, leads the District in wins (3) and is 5th with strikeouts (19). Junior, Aimon Chisholm, is 5th in the District in On Base Percentage (.540). Junior, Jaden Chatman, is 5th in Fielding Percentage (.935).
Coaches for the Trojans are Head Coach, Allen Eubanks, and assistants, Matt Turner, Tim Jordan and Brian Mills.
The Trojans go on the road to face McLaurin in a key district game this Friday 3/24 with JV starting at 4:30 and Varsity at 6:30. The Trojans travel to Taylorsville 3/25 to play a varsity game only at 3:00 p.m. They will travel to Raleigh Tuesday 3/28 to start a key district series with JV starting at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 6:30 p.m. The Trojans finally make it back home on Friday, March 31st, to take on the Raleigh Lions with JV starting at 4:30 and Varsity at 6:30 p.m.
